Le Blog bio picture

welcome!

My new blog is here. Thank you for stopping by to read a little about my life and work. My name is Donna McMullin and I am a photographer living in beautiful St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

I like to take pictures. I love the process and the outcomes. My most rewarding work comes from taking photos of people, living life and experiencing moments.

I am committed to lifelong learning and photography has become somewhat of a creative challenge for me. I aim to have each shoot better than the last to become the best photographer I can be.

Photographs create emotion, they are an investment, always growing in value with time.  I am thankful everyday that I found my passion in photography and thankful I get to share just a bit of my work here with you.

Barbados

A Barbados blog post is long overdue! But here it is. I went there in October for 6 days, Fall is the slower season in Barbados. I went with one of my best girls Joanna. We had a great time, I will try not to go on too much here but I think we found a piece of heaven. Really beautiful and friendly people, perfect sandy beaches, an average yearly temperature of 26c, colorful culture full of dancing, fishing and music. I could just go on and on, we loved it so much, we are going back in May. I can’t express enough, if you ever get the chance to go, just do it, Barbados will not disappoint. While I was there I had the chance to bob in the waves, work on my sunburn lol, play in the sand, ride in the local busses (small minivans that squeeze in as many people as possible), shop and cook in the heat of Bridgetown, take in some steel drums and traditional dancing at The Plantation, and of course enjoy some of the local food such as the famous Bajan Flying Fish. Some of the highlights of my trip included a local man on the bus that saw my bad sunburn and pulled a huge sprig of Aloe plant out of his bag, wrapped it up and gave it to me for my burn, a random act of kindness. It made my day. Also, while visiting the wildlife reserve in the northern part of this tiny island, I met some new furry friends who you will see in the photos below. A monkey reached out and held my hand while I was there, that is something I won’t easily forget.

Our home away from home for the week was the Silver Point Hotel, really nice place with friendly staff and what seemed like our own little beach in the back of the hotel. In Barbados, all beaches are public but at times we had the beach to ourselves, it was amazing and relaxing. My only regret is not getting more photos of the locals and any photos of Jo and I together, so forgive me if its just landscape/wildlife in my photos but I am going back and I have my shot list prepared!

Jodie + Mark

In October, I traveled to Ottawa to shoot one of my best friend’s wedding. Jodie and I have been friends for 20 years, hard to believe! Photographing her big day was pretty special for me. Well, as with some of my other girlfriends, I’ve lost her to a mainlander. This marriage now means I’ve pretty much given up hope that she will come back to me here on the Rock! Seriously though, it’s nice to see your friends so happy, even if I do selfishly wish they would both pack it up and move here. Our other friend, Anne, also traveled for the wedding. Thanks Jodie and Mark for putting us up. Thanks also for running around with me to camera stores the day before your wedding so I could buy all the stuff I forgot to take to Ottawa and for your spirited driving that got me to the train right on time lol ! Well, Jodie and Mark had a quaint fall wedding just outside of Ottawa. A beautiful ceremony was followed by a fantastic dinner catered by Issac’s 64 Hundred in Stittsville, ON. Here are a few from Jodie and Mark’s big day.

Still Kickin’

This past 6 weeks have been interesting to say the least, on many different levels. I thought I would update my blog readers though with my whereabouts to let you know I am still here and life is starting to get back to normal somewhat. I have been a delinquent in updating my blog, but there’s been good reasons!

In mid-October, it was off to Ottawa to shoot one of my best friends weddings. The wedding was beautiful and I expect to post it on the blog soon. It was my first out of province wedding so it was quite an experience for me. Not the last out of province wedding I’d say! Look out for Jodie + Mark’s blog post soon!

After Ottawa, it was off to Toronto on the train to meet one of my other best friends, Joanna. From there, we both decided to go to Barbados! The trip had been planned for a while, we just weren’t sure of our final destination. What a destination it was!! Look out for the Barbados post! I am promising a lot of posts here, but no worries, I will deliver in time : ). I still think about Barbados. When its feels cold outside, I take myself back to the constant 28 degree weather and the beautiful warm water. I can still hear the whistling tree frogs at night, the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach and the sound of the steel drum band. At the time when I was there, I felt like I had found heaven on earth. I think I will go back there someday.

After Barbados, back to Toronto to meet Chris in New York City (First leg of this trip was in Gros Morne, an amazing experience that I will never forget). A New York post might be on it’s way… wow, I will be blogging for ages if I plan to deliver on all this now!!

Life has thrown a few unexpected changes lately and all I can say is that life goes on. Sometimes situations are not as they seem and you don’t have the insight until it has become your hindsight. If I can offer one word of advice to you as you read, it is that if there is someone in this world that loves you, they deserve respect. Cheating and lying is selfish. Do something nice for someone today to show them that you love them. No matter how big or small, just do something. Our time here is just too short.

Well, on that note lol, I’m sorry there’s no photo to accompany this blog post. Afterall, it is a photo blog. But I just wanted to give a quick update! I’ve been off the quiet for a while, but I am re-emerging now!

I always sign the end of my blog post with something some people might find cheezy like peace or love, but I will have you know I mean it every time and it is my wish for you and goes out to everyone who reads my blog! So…once again…
Peace and Love : )

Sue Ellen + Mike

I met Sue Ellen and Mike in October for a fall photoshoot. I think these guys are so awesome, and very much in love. The really knew how to have fun at a photoshoot! As with many guys I shoot, I got the warning from Sue Ellen that Mike was pretty stiff in front of the camera. I think he pleasantly surprised her! Especially when he politely asked sue to step aside while I got some photos of him LOL! Thank you guys, you rock! I’ve attached just a few from the shoot.

Nicole + Daniel

What a great thanksgiving weekend! Not only did I get to spend a Monday totally relaxing with a hot bath and a Three’s Company Marathon on DejaView(!) but on Saturday I spent the day with Nicole and Dan for their beautiful wedding. Nicole was a simply stunning bride. Nicole and I worked together for some time so I was really honored when she and Dan chose me as their photographer. I’m so happy that I got to share in this special day and meet all the family and friends. I had a great day with you all and to Nicole and Dan, I wish you both love and happiness forever. Here is just a sampling of the images I have from the day. It’s not very often that wedding photographer gets to photograph inside the Government House, home of the Lieutenant Governor of NL, but it was pretty fabulous and I could have spent a whole weekend in there just creating photos against the beautiful backdrops that exist around every corner.

Steven + Angela

Steven and Angela got married waaay back in August! I am a little behind in my blogging but I have a good reason! Steven & Angela had their magical day back in August. Two nicer people you couldn’t meet. I knew that right from the day we met. Angela looked radiant and as you can see, it was hard not to take a nice photo of her. Steven and the rest of the bridal party kept me smiling all day with their singing and their dancing in between photos. You guys were pretty great. I wish you all the best in the future.

Parkinson Society Superwalk 2009

A few years back, my mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. I have learned a lot about Parkinson’s since we found out she had it and though she will not die from this (thankfully) she may forever live with it because there is presently no cure. Parkinson’s disease affects everyone differently, but many common symptoms are slowed movement, tremors, stooped posture, discomfort, among many others. Michael J. Fox has early-onset Parkinson’s. Mom isn’t able to do the things she once liked to do like walk to the store, walk her dog, take out the garbage or even some other everyday things like cutting vegetables. It’s really hard knowing there’s no cure but every year the Parkinson Society puts off the Superwalk in cities across Canada to raise money for research towards a cure.

Last year at Superwalk, I walked with my friend Fatty. I volunteered to be the photographer for the event (with some assistance from Fatty) and it was a huge success. This year, I decided I wanted to lead a team and bring more people out for the cause, so far, it’s a li’l team of 2 – myself and best friend (Chris!), but there’s still 8 days to the walk, there’s still time! I have been so busy with working, photographing and planning a wedding I haven’t been able to get many sponsors yet, but if you would like to sponsor me or even better join my team, check out my Superwalk page.

Lucky for me, the NL Parkinson Society loved the photos I took last year. So when they got the call from National office looking for a photographer to take photos for a national print campaign featuring a young St. John’s girl, they called me! Pretty exciting I tell you. Young Michealea is only 8. She raises thousands every year during Superwalk to help find a cure. Her grandmother had Parkinson’s but, unfortunately from what I read in the print ad, her grandmother has recently passed away. Over two shoots Michaelea, her mom and I worked hard to get many shots as outlined from head office. After that, we just had to wait and see if they would be used I guess. So at least, I found out that one was used in Canadian Living magazine. Indeed, the ad is really small and the photo even smaller but I don’t care, it’s pretty awesome that my photo is there – I’m so happy!

Taken by my computer, I was in a bit of a rush but just wanted to show the li'l ad!!

This is the photo that was selected for the ad. It looked really dark in the magazine. Maybe because it was sooo tiny LOL

September 6, 2009 - 3:33 pm Sheila - Beautiful Photo's

September 8, 2009 - 11:18 am Callista (Michaelea's Mom) - Donna, So happy to hear that you are participating again this year. Michaelea appeared in Canadian Living, House to Home and Lifestyles as well as a french magazine. There is a video on the superwalk website featuring several of your portraits. We were so pleased, a card picturing Michaelea's worn sneakers also went out to walkers who raised over $15oo last year, real cute(super dirty sneakers). Good luck in your fundraising efforts, awesome avenue to take. Callista Silver

Madison Rose

Today I had a special photoshoot with Madison Rose. Here’s a sneek peek of the beautiful little girl that I have been talking about, Jen & Scott’s baby, and Chris & my little niece! There will be more photos to come when I get the chance to edit the images from today’s shoot!

She sleeps a lot and is a very good baby. She's a little angel.

New Arrival!

This week was pretty exciting! You might remember my blog post about Jennifer & Scott when they were expecting. Well, On Wednesday, August 12th Jennifer & Scott had their beautiful baby girl! Her name is Madison Rose and she is pretty adorable. When she was born, she had to spend some time in ICU as a precautionary measure before being allowed to head home with Mom & Dad. She is home now so expect photos soon soon!! I suspect she will be a very photographed baby!

Since a blog post just isn’t complete without some pics… I have included some below of a baby I photographed about 2 weeks ago. Coincidentally, her name is also Madison! She too is a beautiful new arrival.
