2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk 2009 – Making the Best of it…

The 2nd annual Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk was today. You might wonder what a photo walk is, well, it was started by one of the “Photoshop Guys”/best-selling author of digital photography books, Scott Kelby and groups (max. 50 people) from over 900 cities around the world set out rain or shine to take pictures for 2 hours and then meet up at the end of it all at a local bar or pub to share the discoveries. It’s an exercise in creativity and getting photographers away from the computer and learning how to socialize again ;) The walk also has a competitive component as photographers can compete locally for a small prize and internationally for a grand prize worth over $11,000.

Well, the weather here was really bad but I really wanted to get out and take some photos rain or shine and meet some new photographers. A group of about 25 met at the Basilica Church and set out in the pouring rain to try and get what we could without destroying any equipment. I was hesitant as first but once I got out and got soaked, I didn’t care, it was really nice and the rain was warm. My camera and lens protected by a liquor store bag (yes, I got looks LOL) it held up ok. I have two of the fancier rain sleeves but of course when you never use something and you go to look for it, ya just can’t find it! I can’t really work well with them anyway.

Well, here are some pics I’d like to share with you from around town from today. Nothing too exciting, but I had fun for about an hour.

I can only submit 2 of these photos into the competition, I have no idea which 2 I should submit so if you have any suggestions, just leave a comment below. Thanks for your help!

Some excellent images here, Donna! Hard to say which ones I would submit to the competition. I like them all, but, if I had to narrow them down a bit, I’d pick 1,4,7,9 and 10. To me, these are the most artistic and different from my own style of shooting – which is probably why I like them best.

My sentiments on what to submit as well. I’d vote for #1 & #7. I think the Basillica is great, particularly in B&W as it emphasises the low light and dreary grey which goes with a foggy, rainy day. #7 because the flowers seem to stand out and show their colour and “soldier on” despite the shooting conditions a the time. Of course, that’s just my thoughts. Never know what judges think – and when you see what they pick you’re wondering “what where they thinking?”.

Good luck!

Very nice creations, Donna. My personal picks would be 1,2,4,7,10, but they are all magnificent! #10 and #2 are the front runners for me.

Great job Donna! I don’t know which one is my favorite, but your work is beautiful.

And P.S. you were brave to get drenched like that! For free :) lol
I bought rain covers for my camera on eBay for like $10…they’re clear plastic bags that cover your lens too and are waterproof (I can’t remember the name).

Hi Donna,

I’ve seen your stuff through one of nate’s workshop (i’ve shot with him a few times) and just decided to check our your blog. I didn’t realize you were at the photo walk, did we chat at any point, did you go to Jungle Jims? Just curious, your shots were great, i especially liked the flower through the fence.

Hi Darrell, Yes I was on the photowalk, I was the girl with the liquor store bag over the camera LOL I didn’t go to Jungle Jim’s though because I was way too soaked! Thanks for visiting the Blog!!
